How Do Aligners Work?

At Advanced Orthodontic Specialists, we have a deep appreciation for the importance of addressing issues related to teeth alignment, such as overbites and underbites. If you’ve come across the term “aligners” and are inquisitive about what aligners are and how they work, you have come to the right place. We’re here to provide you with insights and guidance to help you make an informed decision about your orthodontic treatment.

Our dedicated team of experts is committed to enhancing your smile and oral health while ensuring your comfort throughout the process. So, let’s explore the world of aligners together, taking the first step towards a confident and healthy smile.

What Are Aligners?

Aligners are a unique orthodontic solution. Crafted as custom-made, clear plastic trays, they snugly encase your teeth and gradually guide them back to their correct alignment. Unlike traditional braces, aligners can be conveniently removed when necessary, such as while eating or tending to your oral hygiene. However, it’s essential to emphasize that aligners should be worn continuously, including during sleep. Although clear aligners prove effective in addressing the majority of teeth alignment issues, there are instances where they may not be the appropriate choice, and braces may be recommended instead. Our team can help you to understand the treatment options most effective for your smile goals.

How Do Aligners Work?

Teeth aligners put light pressure on your teeth and gradually move the teeth over time. This light pressure goes through the roots of your teeth to your jaw, encouraging your jawbone to adjust, which aligns your teeth. Invisible aligners are gentle, comfortable on the teeth, and must be worn for 22 hours a day in order to effectively straighten your teeth.

For the aligner to work properly, tooth-colored bumps called attachments are bonded to the teeth. Each attachment will be a different shape and placed on your teeth depending on how your teeth need to move to be straightened. The attachment works with the aligner to apply the light pressure to your teeth. Sometimes elastics, which are small rubber bands, are used to fix bite alignments like an overbite, underbite or crossbite. The elastics connect to the top and bottom rows of your teeth by connecting to a hook on the aligner or onto the attachments.

Are Aligners Right For You?

While aligners effectively address the majority of teeth alignment concerns, it’s important to note that they may not be suitable for every case. Our team offers a free consultation to help you understand which treatment is appropriate for you.

Clear aligners offer a comfortable and less noticeable alternative to traditional braces while delivering comparable results. One key advantage of clear aligners, like Invisalign™ or SparkTM aligners, is their flexibility. Unlike braces, which remain fixed in place throughout the treatment, aligners can be comfortably removed daily. This means you can enjoy your meals without restrictions and maintain your oral hygiene routines as usual, ensuring your teeth stay healthy throughout the alignment process.

At Advanced Orthodontic Specialists, we recognize the importance of resolving teeth alignment issues. We offer a personalized approach, comprehensively assessing your case and providing recommendations that align with your oral health needs. Your oral health and happiness are our top priorities, and we are committed to helping you achieve the smile you desire.
