How Do Aligners Work?
Teeth aligners put light pressure on your teeth and gradually move the teeth over time. This light pressure goes through the roots of your teeth to your jaw, encouraging your jawbone to adjust, which aligns your teeth. Invisible aligners are gentle, comfortable on the teeth, and must be worn for 22 hours a day in order to effectively straighten your teeth.
For the aligner to work properly, tooth-colored bumps called attachments are bonded to the teeth. Each attachment will be a different shape and placed on your teeth depending on how your teeth need to move to be straightened. The attachment works with the aligner to apply the light pressure to your teeth. Sometimes elastics, which are small rubber bands, are used to fix bite alignments like an overbite, underbite or crossbite. The elastics connect to the top and bottom rows of your teeth by connecting to a hook on the aligner or onto the attachments.
